    Outdoor Elevator

    1) Does the Outdoor Elevator meet “code”?

The Outdoor Elevator is designed to meet ASME A18.1, National Elevator Code for vertical platform lifts. The core product absolutely meets ASME A18.1. However, there are several possible configurations and it is imperative that your unit is properly configured to ensure code compliance. Furthermore, local jurisdictions may require additional features or options that exceed the standards set by national code, ASME A18.1. It is recommended that homeowners contact their local dealers or a local elevator company for answers to questions regarding inspections, permits and local requirements.

    2) Is the Outdoor Elevator ADA Compliant?

Yes, when properly equipped. The controls, openings and platform size meet ADA Chapter 4, section 410 “Accessible Routes: Platform Lifts”. Ideal design criteria for ADA compliance is front and rear (pass-through) openings with a 6” pit.

    3) Is the Outdoor Elevator wind load rated?

Yes, the Outdoor Elevator carries a PE Engineering Stamp for two wind load classifications-115mph winds and 160 mph winds. The primary difference between the two ratings is the number of fasteners installed when attaching the tower to the house structure. A drawing is available showing the requirements of each rating.

    4) Can the Outdoor Elevator be painted to match my house?

We stock 4 standard colors- White, Light Grey, Almond, Beige. If you prefer a different color, contact us directly. Custom colors are on a case by case basis and additional fees and lead times may apply. Samples of stock colors are available upon request.

    5) Do I have to pour a slab for the Outdoor Elevator to mount on?

There are 2 foundation options: a slab or a footer. A drawing is available showing the requirements of each design.

    6) Can I install the Outdoor Elevator myself?

We recommend the Outdoor Elevator only be installed by certified elevator technicians.

    7) Are larger platform sizes available?

Currently, the Outdoor Elevator is available in three platform sizes, 32” x 48”; 36″ x 48″; and 36″ x 54″; with front openings or front and rear openings. Side openings are not available.

    8) What type of safety devices are on the Outdoor Elevator?

There is a long list of safety devices including but not limited to

    • Broken cable safeties (lock the carriage to the rail if a cable breaks)
    • Safety underpan (carriage will not lower down if there is an obstruction below the lift)
    • Door locks (prevent the lift from operating if a door is open, prevents a door from being opened if the lift is not present.)
    • Facia panels to eliminate shear points
    • Emergency stop switches

    9) Can the Outdoor Elevator be installed in un-enclosed applications requiring more than 14’ travel distance?

Mechanically, the standard Outdoor Elevator can travel 25’. However, national elevator code limits the travel distance to 14’ in the US and 23’ in Canada. Often times, local jurisdictions will grant variances for travel over 14’. Check with your local permitting or inspection authority to confirm local regulations. Commercial applications, per ASME 18.1, require an enclosure on units with travel distances over 60”. It is also possible to obtain a variance for this as well, but it strictly depends on the local jurisdiction. Enclosures may be provided by PLI or fabricated/built locally onsite.

    10) How much does a typical unit cost?

The Outdoor Elevator is priced very competitively when compared to other vertical platform lifts with a travel distance over 7’. To obtain an accurate estimate, please contact us. Because the costs of shipping, labor and permitting varies drastically from one area to another, we do not provide factory pricing information.
